Video: More on UbiGreen!

I thought the UbiGreen idea was so awesome, so novel and so Important, I decided that the best way to treat all of our Post-Thanksgiving fogginess was to just throw you a simple video to watch, instead of torturing any of you with long reading!

Hopefully you had a delightful Thanksgiving, hopefully you don’t have to work this fine day and you’re just reading us for fun and because you love us so much, and hopefully you saved me some pie.  At any rate, we mentioned on Tuesday a new cell phone app that was going to track your carbon footprint for you.  Here is a little video that has a lot more to say.

Have a Great weekend, enjoy the Holiday and we’ll see you bright and early Monday Morning!

Cell Phone App Keeps You Green

Talk about a strange way of using technology and energy to actually stay greener and more environmentally sound!  I just found a pretty awesome little method to help you, in all your day to day hustle and bustle, stay as green as humanly possible with minimal effort.  The best part about this new technique is that it blends seamlessly into an activity you do hundreds of times per day anyway…checking your cell phone.

That’s right, there is a new cell phone app on the block, the UbiGreen Cell Phone App that helps you, on a day to day, hour to hour basis, track your carbon footprint on this green and blue globe we call home.  The coolest part of this new app is just how easy it is to use!  According to the article, “new cell phone application developed by Intel and the University of Washington, senses whether you’re in a plane, train, or car to let you know exactly what your carbon footprint is.”  Wow.  No more guess work, no more hit and miss, this tells you exactly what your short drive to the supermarket, or overnight flight to Japan is actually doing to poor Mother Nature.  Sweet.

Now, the unfortunate bad news:  You’ll have to keep up your guess work and hit or miss for awhile; looks like this app might not see the light of day for about another year.  Blah.  At any rate, this is one I will be anxiously awaiting.  The fact that it uses a built-in accelerometer to track exactly how much you’re moving is just beyond cool, and beyond helpful!

Wireless Mobile Carriers Looking To The Sun

HANOVER, GERMANY - MARCH 04: A woman holds a ...Each and every day, wireless carriers are expanding further and further into the world.  Whereas 10 years ago, cellular phone service and towers were few and far between and only major cities had major service, now, almost anywhere you go on this planet you can fire up your cell phone and get service.  The question remains…at what cost?

That answer might be too scary to answer, but the good thing is, wireless carriers the world around are now looking to harness the power of something readily available to us all, the sun, to help expand even deeper into the known world.  Base stations for cell phone service requires a lot of energy.  That energy can help drive costs up for service in developing areas; by using solar power to power the base stations, costs could go down and the number of people who could afford the service will go up.  Win win, right?

According to the article I read, “Solar power, of course, is not the only renewable energy source being looked at by carriers. Wind power may also have potential in areas that receive less solar energy, but it tends to be less predictable.” I just love seeing alternative energy being used as a viable means to power something that we all rely on.  Keep tuned to this one, I’m loving the idea!
